Today, I happen to have come across a few great quotes that relate to marketing:
"You do not merely want to be considered just the best of the best. You want to be considered the only one who does what you do." - Jerry Garcia
I was interviewed this morning by a reporter for Oculus, the magazine and e-newsletter of the AIA NY Chapter. I used this quote as a way to demonstrate that architects need not to compete with one another, but to truly stand out.
"The best swordsman in the world doesn't need to fear the second best swordsman in the world; no, the person for him to be afraid of is some ignorant antagonist who has never had a sword in his hand before; he doesn't do the thing he ought to do, and so the expert isn't prepared for him; he does the thing he ought not to do; and often it catches the expert out and ends him on the spot." - Mark Twain, from "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court"
I found this one in a Tom Peters presentation while I was searching for the correct phrasing of the Jerry Garcia quote. I think it speaks adequately of the challenge of being a brand leader (like Gensler). The threat isn't the direct competition. It's the competitor who you don't see coming, the renegade.
"The short road to ruin is to emulate your adversary." - Winston Churchill
I'm a big fan of Winston Churchill, and I plan to use this one, too. Don't be a copycat! Do something different!
